Life in Tunku Abdul Rahman College

posted by Alvin Chan

Welcome back world, I’m back from hostel for this weekend. For the past 5 days, it was totally F-A-N-T-A-S-T-I-C at Tunku Abdul Rahman College. Life can never been better than the Orientation Week of your College.

Tuesday, 23rd May 2006, Woke in the morning at 7am and went to take shower using the icy water, my roommate was not used to cold waters, and he complained alot the whole day about why the hostel doesn’t provide heaters. Typical kampung princess boys I suppose.

The Mass Call, which is the first day of Orientation Week was scheduled to start at 8am, but students came as early as 7am and queued up till almost reaching the Campus Canteen II. Me, Bing Rong, Jacky, Clement gathered and went into the College Hall. We were given a Orientation kit, a RED Tunku Abdul Rahman T-Shirt and expected us to change it on the spot before entering the hall. This year’s T-shirt really is lousy in designing compared to the T-Shirts for the January intakes. They had this big big College logo with words below it on the right top side of the shirt from the front side, which makes it like a uniform.

And so, we sat around in the Hall for the next 8 hours listening to ‘lectures’ by the various Head of Departments and Lecturers and Course Representives. All on all, we have 1050 students for Accounting course this year, with 80% of it girls, and maybe 30% of it are pretty girls. So much for a course eh?

And so, the tradition of Accounting course every year was few peoples getting tricked by the seniors to help them to do some work, which end up being selected as candidates of course representives and commitee members. And so, we voted for the candidates for their positions, with some candidates were badly shortlisted without any votes >.< After the voting session, we all went back, feeling dumb to listen to the 8 hours of speeches.

Reached hostel at 6pm, called Mareg out for yumchar at Taman Bunga Raya. Oh my god, the Penang Char Kueh Teow totally sucks. Cooked by Malay, prawns with skins attached, eyes intact, imagine that! And it totally isn't tasty at all, wonder why so many queued up for that stall. Mareg was updating me with happenings in RAN, and I laughed all the way till she finished her updates. And yeah, coming to college life symbolizes a life which I will drop and attaching a whole new life, but with friends attached to me though. Many things happen since I stop RAN for long time, and these bits of stuffs really are hillarious.

Day 2 was the Society Day, which was held at the Sports Complex, with around 20 clubs setting up booths inside there. It was so crowded starting at 8am, and to avoid the sweats of everyone inside an air-conditioned building, we went off to the library to complete our student ID first before squeezing our way back for Society Day. We joined the Student Welfare Society, First Aid Unit and also the Music Club. Can you imagine that, me, joining music clubs, something to note in my life, haha! Met kinda alot of girls on this day, exchanging phone numbers till hand tired >.< After the Society Day, we went to club house and registered ourselves for the Adjusment to College Life activities before headed to the Cafeteria in Clubhouse for our lunch. The 'Red Fried Deer' dish wasn't a bad choice for me, while Jacky and Bing Rong ordered the 'Black Chicken Chop' which was served badly and they had a hard time finishing it.

'Beautify Tunku Abdul Rahman' was the activity for the 3rd day. We were divided into groups and introduced to our group leader and set off to work on the small patch of soil beside our sport complex. Our objective is to plant the patch of soil with beautiful plants and flowers. And so, we headed off with boys holding spades and hoes and work on the land while the girls with glove went over to carry the plants and grass patches and started to hover their skills in gardening onto the piece of land which was soften.

After this event, we were treated with an unscheduled games. This game objective is to let us meet new friends, particularly from the opposite sex. The guys were asked to form a circle and the girls were to form a circle surrounding the guys. Then, the they are to face each other and introduce themselves. After 5 minutes, the girls will then get up and move in a circle and stop awhile and chat with their new met boys. Through this game, I met Cindy, Sook Wen, Kar Mun, and lots more other girls. It was total fun, knowing that our group members consists of many people staying in hostel, or just nearby campus. Numbers were exchanged rapidly, while we glanced at a particularly 'horny' guy which keep push himself closer and closer towards a pretty girl when they were chatting. The situation was, hmm, enjoyable to watch ^_^

On Friday, which is our Day 4 in Tunku Abdul Rahman College, we were having Games & Telematch day on this day. Jacky and Clement arrived early in the canteen at 7am and started cell-calling me >.< When I reached the canteen, they were already targeting that particular girl who sat with her friend at the other end of the canteen. And so, we went to register for our groups for the telematch. Oh my, never did we expected that we will be in the same group as the 2 girls which they 2 were targetting at.

The first game was water bomb =X Group members were required to stand in a line till the emptybottle at the end of the line and we were to pass sponges with water to the back without getting caught by the ‘Helpers’ and squeeze the water through it to fill it to the brim. And so, we enjoyed ourselves with everyone soaking in water on the first game =)

As for the second game, we were required to play a game like ‘Tenteng’ and throw a marble into our team’s basket. It was hillarious when I and Jacky can’t jump well wahahaha. Our group emerge first in the end. Congrats to team D1.

The third game was a team work game, where we were required to bring our team members over to the other end with 4 chairs. Therefore, we planned ourselves and brought the girls 4 by 4 or 5 by 5, whenever the can squeeze in. Jack, Me, Adrian, Eric and Hon’s team are the best where we finished it in just 10 rounds of shifting chairs.

During the 4th game, which is also another wetting game, we got a chance to know that 2 girl well more this time since we enjoyed the games all the way and were laughing all the way together with Jack and Clement. Serene and and Irene were their names and we did our best in this cup passing water game to the back, with everyone getting wet at the end of this game, since the ‘HELPERS’ poured water on us to ‘refill’ our cups.

The 5th game was actually a little bit biased in the game setting. One of the team member were required to be blindfolded and the team members, scattered around the field were required to guide him/her to collect the numbered papers according to the number sequence without telling him/her directions. Jacky was our blindfolded member and he was having a hardtime running around the field trying to get the number sequence right. As I said earlier this game was biased, this is because the helpers did not actually scattered 1 particular group members around the field and they just won instantly without much time consumed since their number sequence were in a straight line. Serene was not happy and complained to the commitee incharge with fire. And so, the helpers apologized to us at the end of the day. At least, this cooled her boiling head =)

The last game was a game whereby the participants were required to crossed under a string tied to two ends of poles. Each round starts with the string getting lowered down more and more, making the difficulty harder and harder. Me and Jack clumpsied ourselves into the second wave and failed to pass the third wave. O wells.

After the telematch, we exchanged phone numbers among our team mates. Group D1, wE aRe oNe! Thanks Clement, Jacky, Adrian, Eric, Ah Boo, Hon, Serene, Irene, Jacklyn, and the rest of the girls short listed. We made our day a memorable in college life.

At 1pm, we gathered at the cafeteria and ate our lunch after our bath and prepared ourselves for the Adjustment to College Life Programme. Serene and I chatted kinda alot, from secondary life till college life and also life, from interest till the games we played in the morning.

Group D1, consist of me, Jack, Clement, Eric, Adrian, Hon, Serene, Irene and the rest went off to Function Room in Club House to participate in the Adjustment to College Life programme. At the function room, we were given groups again, this time Serene and I were in the same group, and we met a new group of friends at here. They included Chai Peng, Nelson, Sing Nian, Bao Bao, Felicia, and lots more. Notable session was the part where we gathered around in groups and had a session with a facilitator and we share our experiences and difficulties with each other and facilitators. We were told that some students cried at the previous sessions, and I was wondering, why would you cry just because you are away from home and you are still alive with lots of new friends around you. Perhaps not out-going, homesick? eww =(

Best part of this age of life would be? Clubbing, Mixing around, Hipping around together with friends, yea this the way baby, college life, enjoy it till the fullest as it is a once in a lifetime experience. I’m enjoying it and surely will enjoy it in the future, along with my times on studies for a professional ACCA accountant.

That is all for now, guess I’ll get off to the shower room now. See ya all for my next entry in near future.
